Qfm Cultural Guide for Wednesday the 21st of October

Blue is a group formed by Fernando Ortí, Juanjo Ortí, Alfonso Trujillo & Francisco Lorente in 1998. Several years and line-up changes later, they have re-united to record a new album, SelfService, which is a compilation of their original hits, reworks and completely new material.Blue will be in concert at the Tenerife Auditorium on the 24th of this month, 9pm. De Repente Amazonas is a photographic exhibition open tomorrow at La Laguna's Sala de Arte Maria Alonso, as part of the Otoño Cultural project. The works, by Antonio Sabater, highlight many aspects of the Amazomian forest, and can be seen until the 12th of December.


Qfm Cultural Guide for Tuesday the 20th of October

On Sunday the 25th of this month, the 7th Feria de Almendras will take place at the Plaza de San Pedro, at Aripe, Guia de Isora, between 10am and 3pm. This event is aimed at highlighting and maintaining century old traditions of cultivation and culinary use of almonds and other fruits of South Tenerife. .


Qfm Cultural Guide for Monday the 19th of October

Tomorrow at Sta Cruz's Espacio Cultural de Cajacanarias, Rafael Balmaseda is in concert paying homage to legendary Cuban composer - pianist Ernesto Lecuona. The concert is part of the Otoño Cultural project, and will begin at 8.30pm.

The Tenerife Opera Festival continues at Teatro Leal with Mozart's El director de Teatro and Haydn's La Cantante. The renditions are tomorrow, the 22nd and the 24th of this month, all at 8.30pm. These works are produced by Marco Carniti, a young director who brings a fresh and sometimes humorous approach to these classics which were created two centuries ago, yet are still relevant to modern day life. .


Qfm Cultural Guide for Sunday the 18th of October

Sta Cruz's Casa de la Cultura is hosting Infantiluz by Felipe Juan until the 28th of this month. This project combines paintings, music, poetry and stories. The project is located at the La Granja gallery.

Festival de Jóvenes Promesas is a talent competition for young performers, organised by the Ayto de Arona, and is accepting entries until the 30th of October, with the Galas scheduled for the 13th and 14th of November. There first Gala will be for Dance and Instrumentalists, the second for Soloists and Groups. This event is aimed at promoting music and arts for young artists based in the Canary Islands, and more info can be found at the Ayto de Arona's Oficina de Juventud. .


Qfm Cultural Guide for Saturday the 17th of October

La Laguna's Casa de los Capitanes is hosting Premio Carmen Arozena, una Antología, an exhibition of the winning entries of the Carmen Arozena Awards of the last 35 years. These awards are organised by the La Palma Cabildo, and are open to Spanish and International artists. The exhibits are on display to the public until the 24th of this month.

Inspiración Atlántica is an exhibition of 35 paintings from various artists, themed around the Seas around the Canary Islands. Caja Canarias at Pto de la Cruz is hosting this exhibition until the 23rd of October. .


Qfm Cultural Guide for Friday the 16th of October

The Tenerife Tourism Board has organised a photographic competition aimed at reflecting the island as a unique destination, as part of the "Siento Tenerife" or Feel Tenerife promotional project. Themes can highlight the general warm, friendly ambience of Tenerife, or focus upon themes such as landscapes, architecture, culture, traditions, urban life, hiking, outdoor sports and leisure. This project is supported by the Tenerife Cabildo, the Canarian Government and the Tourism Board.


Qfm Cultural Guide for Thursday the 15th of October

Tomorrow evening at Pto e la Cruz's El Castillo de San Felipe, Anna Rodriguez and Eliseo Lloreda are in concert. This duo have a broad reportoir of Jazz, Bossa and Fusion, and the concert will begin at 8.30pm.

Casa Africa 2009 is a song competition accepting entries up until the 31st of October. Submissions are welcome from anyone within the European Community or any African country, and the songs must, of course, have an African theme. More info at casafrica.com.


Qfm Cultural Guide for Wednesday the 14th of October

This Saturday, 9pm, The Tenerife Auditorium is hosting ¿Me Estás Oyendo, Inútil?, a musical themed around and against the sexist Mexican culture, with the content of its songs having a definite femenist tendency.

Also at the Tenerife Auditorium, the Brad Mehldau Trio will be in concert on the 21st of this month, 9pm. This world renowned trio have worked with the likes of Joshua Redman, Pat Metheny, Lee Konitz & John Scofield, and their work has adorned the soundtracks of movies such as Eyes Wide Shut. The Brad Mehldau Trio, live at the TF Auditorium on the 21st of October. .


Qfm Cultural Guide for Tuesday the 13th of October

From the 19th until the 25th of this month, the Tenerife Design Festival will be held at Sta Cruz's Circulo de Bellas Artes, T-E-A, Sala de Arte La Recova and several other venues throughout the city. This festival was created to support 3 fundamental objectives; local identity, landscape profiling and tourism, and will host many exhibitions and workshops for both professionals and the general public. Representations from designers and arquitects such as Los Hermanos Campana, América Sánchez, Héctor Serrano, Walking Chair, El Último Grito & Albert Folch will be on display. .


Qfm Cultural Guide for Monday the 12th of October

As part of the CajaCanarias Otoño Cultural project, two film showings are scheduled at the Espacio Cultural de CajaCanarias , Sta Cruz,. The theme of this year´s project is the importance of water, and both films highlight the theme. On the 19th, El Sueño del Agua will be shown, a documentary demonstrating the problems associated with water, with children in 5 different parts of the world talking about the issues first hand. On the 26th, El Agua de la Vida will be shown, with director Juan Manuel Chumilla traveling the length of a river whilst illustrating the history of this diminishing commodity. Each film will be screened at 8.30pm.

The 8th Arona Short Film competition is accepting entries from now until the 23rd of this month. More info at www.arona.org. .


Qfm Cultural Guide for Sunday the 11th of October

The 2nd International Photo Exhibition in Support of the Saharan People has opened simultaneously in 21 Spanish cities, as well as in Berlin, Paris, Dublin, Turin, Havana and Mexico City. In Tenerife, the exhibition is based at La Tasca La Tata, Sta Cruz. The exhibits highlight Saharan refugee camps, and some are available for purchase with proceeds going towards the Walia Project in the region.

Al Otro Lado is an exhibition by Lute Déniz, hosted by Sta Cruz's Boca Raton Art gallery. The works are human forms in good spirits, entwined with colours and textures, and the author is inviting the viewer to decide if they are looking at the picture, or are reflected within it. The exhibition can be seen until the end of this month. .


Qfm Cultural Guide for Saturday the 10th of October

Tenerife Espacio de las Artes & El Corte Inglés have organised the 3rd Press Photography Competition, as part of the 10th International FotoNoviembre project which is to run from the 8th of November until the 10th of December. The theme is open, with individual and 5 frame categories, and will be judged on the 22nd of October by a panel of judges from the press and journalism sectors. The Ayto de San Miguel has initiated its 1st New Talent Art Competition, aimed at nurturing young artists in the area. Entries will be accepted until the 30th of October from artists between 14 and 17 years of age, with any theme or style. More info by calling 922 700000. .


Qfm Cultural Guide for Friday the 9th of October

Tonight 9pm at the Tenerife Auditorium, the Big Band de Canarias are in concert. This line up consists of some of the island's premier jazz musicians, many of whom emigrated to other parts of the world to learn different disciplines of jazz and other music. Also, the Big Band de Canarias has several noteworthy musicians from Europe, Africa and America which influence the sound of the project, which is the brainchild of Kike Perdomo and Yul Ballesteros and directed by Dick Oats.

At the Auditorium tomorrow evening, once again starting at 9pm, the Association Manifeste present a dance spectacular called Orfeo no Está. .


Qfm Cultural Guide for Thursday the 8th of October

The CajaCanarias Autumn cultural program, El Otoño Cultural, has begun in Tenerife and Gran Canaria, with activities such as cinema, exhibitions, theatre, ethnic music, jazz, classical music, flamenco and other activities on offer until the 27th of November. This year´s theme is water and its importance in the Canary Islands.

The next event will be an exhibition called Vibración Muda , open as from tomorrow at La Laguna's Fundación Cristino de Vera, courtesy of Basque sculptor Chillada.

Also opening tomorrow is El Principito al Desnudo , directed by Bibiana Monje, at Sta Cruz's Espacio Cultural de CajaCanarias. On the 15th, the musical components of El Otoño Cultural begin with a concert by chellist David Darling. All this season's concerts are scheduled for 8.30pm at the Espacio Cultural de CajaCanarias, the childrens activities start at midday. For more info, check www.cajacanarias.org. .

La Laguna's Sala Juan Cas is hosting an exibition consisting of the best entries from last year's Caja Canarias Premio de Artes Plásticas Manolo Millares, a total of 32 sculptures on display until the 10th of October. .


Qfm Cultural Guide for Tuesday the 6th of October

The history of La Laguna is the inspiration behind La Memoria Inflamada, an exhibition by painter Jesus de la Rosa, on display at the Convento de Santo Domingo until the 25th. .


Qfm Cultural Guide for Monday the 5th of October

La Laguna's Instituto Cabrera Pinto is hosting "Picasso:La Belleza Múltiple", a collection of 60 of Piccasso's works which map his artistic evolution. This exhibition is organised by the Canarian Government and Malaga's Fundación Picasso-Museo Casa Natal, and will be open until the 15th of October.

Casa Africa 2009 is a song competition accepting entries up until the end of this month. Submissions are welcome from anyone within the European Community. .

Qfm Cultural Guide for Saturday the 3rd of October

Benito Cabrera has, over the decades, gained a reputation of one of the Canary Islands most innovative musicians. His instrument of choice is the timple, commonly used in Canarian folklore and traditional music disciplines, but Benito Cabrera has created fusions of Canarian music with classical and contemporary pop styles. He has recorded seven solo albums, and toured throughout mainland Spain, Cuba, the USA, Puerto Rico, Belgium, France, Holland, Germany, the UK and Japan.

Tomorrow night, 9pm at the Tenerife auditorium, we have the opportunity to see this maestro of the timple in a highly recommended concert.

Also scheduled at the Auditorium is La Centrola, a children´s adaptation of La Cenicienta by Rossini, from the 6th to the 8th of this month, 6.30pm. .


Qfm Cultural Guide for for Friday the 2nd of October

The Bounty Fashion Show will be held at Sta Cruz's Castillo Negro tonight, 9pm, with proceeds being donated towards Social projects within Sta Cruz. Participating fashion houses are Dolce & Gabanna, Diesel, Tony Morato, Sand as well as some of this island's up and coming designers. Music will be courtesy of Rebeca Brown who will be debuting her latest work, Disco Drama.

Tonight, the Underground Rock Pub near El Médano's main plaza is hosting a free entry rock concert. Tonight, RIGA are on stage, a Canarian band with a repertoire of Spanish Rock - Pop from 9pm until very late. Tomorrow evening, the venue will have a 70's, 80's and 90's party with an international DJ line-up.

The 4th International Documentary Festival is accepting entries from producers, directors and film professionals until the 15th of October. More info at miradasdoc.com. .


Qfm Cultural Guide for Thursday the 1st of October

Agencia de Viajes Acentejo and M&N Eventos have organised a new project in Tenerife to promote wine tourism at the island's bodegas. The first event, on Saturday the 3rd, is an excursion to the Viñátigo Bodega at Comarca Ycoden Daute Isora. The pick up points are Sta Cruz's Recinto Ferial, 9.45am, and La Laguna's Plaza del Adelantado at 10.15am. After this initial wine tasting session, the excursion will move onto El Sauzal's La Casa Museo del Vino to sample Canarian Cuisine with the Viñátigo wines. Fore more info, call 922 313 075. .
